Three Steps Above Heaven 3 (2026) – What We Know About the Long-Awaited Sequel

More than a decade after Three Steps Above Heaven and I Want You, the story of Hache, Babi and Gin could still return to the big screen. Although Three Steps Above Heaven 3 has not been officially announced as a production and has no confirmed release date, director Fernando González Molina has confirmed that a screenplay for a third film already exists.

Fernando González Molina Confirms the Script Exists

In a 2026 interview, González Molina directly addressed the possibility of continuing the saga. The director revealed that there is already a completed screenplay for the third installment and described the story as a project he would genuinely like to make.

However, fans should not mistake the existence of the script for an official green light. González Molina also admitted that making the movie is currently complicated. In other words, the story is written, but production, financing, scheduling and the return of the original cast would still need to come together before cameras could start rolling. citeturn0news8turn0search0

A Story About Time, Growing Up and Second Chances

One of the most interesting details about the proposed sequel is that it would not simply repeat the formula of the first two movies. According to González Molina, the screenplay explores the passage of time, growing older, reunions and second chances.

The director previously explained that the script was developed as a story about what happens when people from the past meet again after years of change. Rather than simply returning to the teenage romance that defined the original films, the third chapter would explore how Hache and the other characters have evolved as adults. citeturn0search0turn0search1

Could Mario Casas Return as Hache?

There is strong reason for fans to hope for the return of Mario Casas. González Molina has previously said that Casas would be delighted to make another film, while also mentioning Clara Lago as someone who could potentially return.

The biggest question has been María Valverde, whose character Babi remains one of the most important parts of Hache's past. González Molina has said that he hopes Valverde would fall in love with the screenplay and consider returning to the story. citeturn0search1

The Original Trilogy Connection

The proposed movie would continue the world established by Three Steps Above Heaven (2010) and I Want You (2012). Both films were directed by Fernando González Molina and became especially popular with younger audiences in Spain and internationally.

The original story followed Hache and Babi through an intense relationship, while the second film introduced Gin and showed Hache trying to rebuild his life while struggling with memories of his first love.

Not a Confirmed 2026 Release

Despite the growing interest surrounding the project, Three Steps Above Heaven 3 does not currently have an official release date. There is also no confirmed production start or official casting announcement for the third film.

What is confirmed is much more interesting than a simple rumor: the screenplay exists, Fernando González Molina wants to make the movie, and the director has publicly discussed the possibility of bringing the characters back years later. In 2026, he described the project as something that is difficult to realize at the moment, but left the door open for the future. citeturn0news8turn0search0

What Could the Third Movie Be About?

The available information suggests a more mature continuation rather than another teenage romance. The characters would have to confront the lives they built after the events of the previous films, the choices they made and the possibility that people from the past can unexpectedly return.

• Hache could return as an older and more mature version of the character.
• Babi could once again become an important part of his unresolved past.
• Gin could return as another major figure in Hache's adult life.
• The story would focus on time, reunions and second chances.
• The screenplay is reportedly designed as a different and more mature story from the first two films.

Will Three Steps Above Heaven 3 Actually Happen?

For now, the most accurate answer is: possibly, but it is not confirmed. The project has moved far beyond a simple fan-made rumor because the director himself has confirmed that a screenplay has been written. At the same time, there is no official production announcement yet.

For fans who have been waiting since I Want You in 2012, however, the existence of a finished script is a significant development. Fernando González Molina has repeatedly expressed his affection for these characters, and his latest comments show that the idea of returning to their story has never completely disappeared.

Final Thoughts

Three Steps Above Heaven 3 remains an unconfirmed project, but it is no longer just an internet rumor. Fernando González Molina has confirmed that a screenplay exists and that he would like to direct the film. The story would reportedly move beyond teenage romance and explore what happens when people meet again after years of growing, changing and living separate lives.

Whether Mario Casas, Clara Lago and María Valverde will ultimately reunite on screen remains unknown. For now, the screenplay is ready, the director is interested, and the possibility of seeing Hache's story continue is still alive.
